Bird Hunting in Texas
Our variety of offerings for Bird Hunting in Texas is for experts, enthusiasts, or aspiring bird and waterfowl hunters. Our area of Texas exists along the Central Flyway area of the U.S. Many of the western hemispheres migratory bird species use this route on their journey to the south for winter. With the wide assortment of birds that migrate through our area, opportunities abound for bird hunting all season long.
The Texas hunting season begins every year on September 1st with the opening of Dove hunting season. The opportunity to test your skills at these fast-moving birds continues through the end of December. September also brings about an opportunity for yet another fast-flying feathered target moving south for the summer, Early Teal. The action picks up in late October with the beginning of the Texas Waterfowl hunting season which continues through the end of January. Also, during this time of the hunting season another migratory game bird stretches its wings through our region, the much-sought-after, Sandhill Crane or the Ribeye of the Sky. If Upland Game Birds are more your style, then Four County outfitters can set you up to hunt free-ranging Bob White Quail.
Whatever game bird you are seeking to hunt, our bird hunting guides will put you in the right spot to make your bird hunting trip successful. Bring your family, your corporate group, your hunting buddies and bring along your bird dog for any of these bird hunting adventures.
Dove Hunting in Texas
Each new Texas hunting season begins with Dove Hunting. Bird hunting enthusiasts will have a blast in our dove hunting fields. Corporate hunts, Family hunts or just buddy hunts, let us put you on the birds to try your luck at shooting your bag limit. Bring plenty of ammo, a comfortable field chair, and your can koozie, as temperatures can still be on the warm side at the start of our bird hunting season.
Your dove hunt will take place in one of our many dove hunting fields. These fields are utilized by the dove as a major food source. The dove hunting fields are planted with wheat, sunflowers, milo, and sesame. Additionally, we hunt over watering holes, for bird hunters to test their skill at bagging a limit of 15 dove per day. Bird dogs are always welcome.
We can package your dove hunt to provide you and your group with meals and lodging or you can come to us for only a day hunt. No matter your choice, our dove hunting fields will produce opportunities for you to shoot and bag your limit.
Teal Hunting in Texas
One of the first groups of waterfowl to migrate through Texas are the Teal. Blue and Green-winged Teal are some of the most abundant waterfowl traveling through the Central Flyway. Teal are fast flyers that commonly travel in big groups that can lead to high paced, action-packed hunts. If you have never experienced a successful teal hunting trip, it definitely needs to be high on your bucket list. With a 6-bird limit you are allowed a full strap of teal just like you would during regular duck season. We can shoot blue and green wing teal during our September hunting season.
Texas Bird Hunting Seasons
Texas Bird Hunting Early Season
(September 1 - Early November)
We open our bookings for the hunting season with Dove, Ducks, and Quail. The weather during this part of the hunting season usually starts out hot. While we expect cooling trends toward the end of this time period. In September, our temperatures usually stay under 100 degrees and get down in the 60s on cool days late in the month. This is when the cold northern air starts to push in, turning a dove hunt into a shootout. With the month of October, the weather starts to cool while the big game hunting heats up. Temperatures can still reach into the 90s but expect mostly cooler weather where temperatures can get down to freezing on rare occasions.
Texas Bird Hunting Mid-Season 1
(Early November - Late January)
We open bookings for Sandhill Crane and Goose hunting, while continuing to take bookings for Dove, Ducks, and Quail. The weather during this time of the year has us seeing cooler temperatures almost every day. Early November, we can still see days in the upper 80s, but early morning frosts are more common through the months of November and December. At this time of year, the Winter wheat crops are beginning to grow, making our fields like a shopping mall for wildlife. January starts our cold season, with temperatures usually ranging from the 30s to 70s.
Snow is uncommon for our region, but we do typically get 6 inches to 12 inches a year, if we’re lucky. A late January Duck, Goose, or Crane hunt can see freezing temperatures in the mornings, along with the occasional frozen ponds and streams.
Texas Bird Hunting Mid-Season 2
(Late January - Early April)
Most “Game Species” are out of season except for Quail, which concludes at the end of February. Our temperatures are usually the coldest of the year, ranging from the 60s to the teens in February. Spring weather usually hits us about mid-March and the temperatures will start rising into the 80s and 90s by April, which begins the growing season for many of the native plants. This is time when the wildlife is drawn out of their winter homes to take advantage of the abundance of fresh food to forage.
